Cruise to the top of Hawke’s Bay’s Te Mata peak and, funnily enough, you’ll be able to spot Te Mata estate. It’s the home of some of The Bay’s most legendary wines – like Coleraine, Bullnose and their Elston Chardonnay that consistently ranks as one of the best in the country with all the top wine scribblers.
But if $30-40 a bottle stretches the purse strings a bit far there’s no shame in hooking into their Estate Chardonnay. You might remember it as Te Mata Woodthorpe Chardonnay? Woodthorpe’s no longer in the name but they still use fruit from the Woodthorpe Terraces, as well as vineyards in the Bridge Pa Triangle and Havelock North.
The wine’s as reliable as its always been. It’s a style Michael Cooper called “generous, ripe, peachy, gently toasty flavours (4 stars)” We say it’s the kind of style we love to bust out with our full flavoured white meat, fish and seafood dishes.
