Oof, what a wine this is! The Cabernet Shiraz blend is about as classic as Aussie reds come and this here is an absolutely stonker of a red for the money.
A legend of the Aussie wine scene if there ever was one! Hugo Gramp was born in the Barossa in 1895 and it was in this part of the wine world that he worked and lived his entire life. It was Hugo’s grandfather Johan who was a pioneer of the region, planting the first vines in 1847 and running the family wine ‘biz with his son Gustav (known as “Gramp & Sons”), until Hugo took over the reigns at age 25.
St Hugo have built their name in producing first class Cabernet from the Coonawarra and Shiraz from the Barossa. Here they’ve combined the two in a 60/40 Cabernet Shiraz blend with 58% from the Coonawarra and 42% from the Barossa.
Scoring a whopper 95 points with Tyson Stelzer for James Halliday’s Wine Companion. He said “60/40% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz. 58/42% Coonawarra/Barossa Valley. Matured 18 months in (58% new) oak barrels (French, American and a little Hungarian). Barossa shiraz serves to both build and tone Coonawarra cabernet, united seamlessly in a tightly coiled structure of great promise. Crunchy, focused, compact black fruits are intricately supported by a multicultural mix of oak, laying out a long finish of high-cocoa dark chocolate and coffee bean. A cellaring special.”
Try cellaring up until 2035.
