A warm climate Aussie Shiraz from the wiley old grandmasters of Aussie red wine making. The Bin 28 is a real consumer favourite every year from the Penfolds Bin Range – which is probably why the wiley old grandmaster of Aussie wine critics James Halliday calls it “the mother of the bin range”.

Although originally produced from a single vineyard site (their Kalimna vineyard, you’d never have guessed) as popularity and demand grew they began to produce the wine from multiple vineyards across multiple regions, but still with plenty of fruit presence from the world famous Barossa Valley in there.

This is the latest 2021 release with the usual solid scores backing it up…

93/100 (Huon Hooke, The Real Review)
“Good deep colour; aromas of black fruits and tar, graphite, ironstone, nutmeg and star anise, the palate firmly, boldly structured and emphatic, with notes of nutmeg again and assorted brown spices mingling with the black fruit flavours. Very approachable already but will obviously also age well. (McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, Clare Valley)”

92/100 (James Halliday’s Wine Companion)
“A McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley sourced shiraz matured in American oak (7% new) for 12 months. Deep crimson in the glass, the wine initially comes across a little shy, showing itself in the traditional Penfolds ‘house style’ after some time in the glass. Plentiful black and plummy fruit depth with hints of spice, roasting meats, soy sauce, charcuterie, Old Jamaica chocolate, licorice and earth. Tenses somewhat on the medium-length finish.”

It’s simple. Drink some, cellar some. How long you ask? This could comfortably lay down up to 2039, if you could possible wait that long!
