This is on the money! Well, actually the money’s on the bottle. This is Patria Chica Vino De Pago and its not just the label that’s award winning – the wine’s pretty bloody good too!
The project of Patria Chica wasn’t just about producing a seriously good red to showcase the winery and region (Aragon in north-east Spain by the way) but to pay tribute to their farming and rural history. Featuring an old farmer with his hoe (by that we mean his farming tool) and a bank note (remember when real money was a thing?) printed on textured Materica Limestone paper with holographic and watermark effects.
There was just as much attention to the detail in the winemaking as there was the brand and label design too. An organic blend of tempranillo, garnacha, merlot and cabernet this is sure to spin the wheels of those that love their reds full bodied and loaded to the gunnels with flavour…
5 Stars, 95/100 (Sam Kim)
“This is immensely complex and engaging on the nose showing dark berry, smoked game, violet and cedar aromas, leading to a generously expressed palate delivering expansive mouthfeel and rich texture. Sophisticated and stylish with an impressively long elegant finish. At its best: now to 2030.”
93/100 (Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review)
“A blend of 60% tempranillo, 26% garnacha, 12% merlot and 2% cabernet. Full-bodied, flavoursome red with ripe cherry/berry, violet, integrated oak, wood smoke and liquorice characters supported by rich, ripe tannins. Approachable now but no rush.”
91/100 (James Suckling)
“Aromas of ripe blackberries, raspberries, plums, violets and cloves. Medium-to full-bodied with ripe tannins and fresh acidity. Juicy, ripe and fruity finish.”
Wines labelled Vino de Pago sit in the highest quality tier of Spanish wine, they’re single vineyard wines and to date only 20 Spanish wineries can boast having the “Denomination de Pago” status. Drink now to cellar until 2030.
