Shhhh. Watch out. Spy’s about.
It’s 007-vino with Marlborough’s Spy Valley. Named after the neighbouring Waihopai spy bases (those two big golf ball shaped buildings) and when the secret agents have finished a hard day’s work keeping an eye on the bad guys they love nothing more than a glass of Pinot Noir grown right on their doorstep.
Central Otago often grabs the headlines when it comes to Kiwi Pinot but, take it from us, Marlborough’s the spot to go when you’re comparing quality dollar for dollar and the Spy Valley Pinot Noir is no different.
Using fruit from two of their Southern Valley vineyards, in the Waihopai and Omaka Valleys, this is a cracking Pinot for a snip under $30.
Scoring 4 1/2 Stars with NZ critic Michael Cooper who said “The 2020 vintage (4.5*) is an elegant, finely poised, ageworthy red, estate-grown in the Southern Valleys and matured for 11 months in French oak barrels. Full, bright ruby, it is fragrant, mouthfilling and supple, with very good complexity and depth of cherry, plum, spice and nutty oak flavours. Best drinking 2024+.”
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to slot a six pack of this truly yummy wine into your shopping cart now and food match with spicy dishes and particularly Asian or Indian cuisine. This wine will not self destruct in five seconds but we do recommend enjoying it up to 2026.
