Peter Lehmann Futures Shiraz

Back to the Futures. A dirty big old Barossa Shiraz with lashings of fruit!

Peter Lehmann Futures Shiraz

2016, Barossa Valley Australia
  • Named "The Futures" after an agreement (by handshake, true old school fashion) that Peter Lehmann would pay the growers once the wine sold, during a time of much uncertainty for growers in the Barossa region
  • Lehmann's first wine in 1980 was called "The Futures Shiraz" (under a label he called Masterton of the Barossa) - he later put his own name on the bottle for the first time in 1982
  • Your typical dirty big old Barossa Shiraz - full flavoured, full bodied, lashings of dark fruit flavours and several years bottle age under its belt
  • A big red that'll be best served with food - think chargrilled steaks, roast beef and game meats

Peter Lehmann The Barossan Shiraz – a story about a man who some say helped save the Barossa. A bank loan, a handshake and working together during the tough times.

Lehmann left school early in 1947 to start an apprenticeship as a winemaker and by the late 50s he was winemaker at the iconic winery Saltrams. In 1978 a fruit surplus spelt disaster for the region with companies refusing to buy grapes and leaving the livelihoods of over 140 local growers in the shtuck!

Peter put his balls on the line, took out a loan, assembled the equipment needed and built a small winery (called Masterton of the Barossa) to process their grapes. The first vintage was produced in 1980 and was named “The Futures” after the agreement (by handshake, in true old school fashion) that Peter would pay the growers first once the wine sold. His word was his bond. By 1982 (after much convincing needed) he put the Peter Lehmann name on the wines – the rest is history!

This label is a nod back to that very first release. There’s no mucking about here – this is your big old dirty Barossan red with lashings of dark fruit flavours and several years bottle age under its belt. A bigger style red like this needs a bigger style feed to go with it like chargrilled steaks, roast beef and game meats.
