Mills Reef Elspeth Chardonnay is the winery’s flagship Chardonnay. Elspeth (named after the winemaker’s Grandmother, Elspeth Preston) sits right up there with Hawke’s Bay’s wine elite. If it’s Elspeth slapped on the label you know you’ve got one classy little number in your hot little hands!
How classy you ask? Well five of the last nine releases have scored 95/100 from Master of Wine Bob Campbell. And we’re expecting good things from this latest 2021 release given what a belter of a vintage it was in Hawke’s Bay!
This is hand picked fruit from one of their prized single vineyards in the Bride Pa sub region. Aged for 12 months in 100% French oak, 35% in expensive new oak and given 35% malolactic fermentation for a buttery texture. This is a wine released to drink well early on but it’s sure as hell got the legs to go the distance, try 7-8 years from vintage.
