On a 1769 voyage Captain Cook saw potential in what he saw at the eastern end of Waiheke Island. Shiver me timbers, it was timber! He saw the massive kauri trees as ideal masts for the fleet of wooden battleships – thus he named it Man O’ War bay.

If only he’d realised what potential this part of New Zealand had for growing grapes. And boy, does it grow them well!

Their white label Man O’ War Chardonnay is produced from fruit grown on a number of small vineyard blocks dotted across the volcanic hilltops of the eastern end of the island. Puriri, Nikau, Little Beast, Lone Kauri and Root Rake.

Rich, ripe stonefruit flavours with a touch of oak, this is a great example of what Waiheke can do when it comes to Chardonnay. Here’s a tip – if you’re on the island make the trek over to the eastern side and visit the Man O’ War crew. Grab yourself a glass and enjoy the million dollar view from the lawn or beach – it doesn’t get much better!
