Imported into NZ by Master of Wine Steve Bennett – due to increased costs this wine won’t be brought into NZ again. We’ve bought the very last stocks of this seriously good value Italian red! Get it before it goes!
“Il Sarone”. “Big Saro”. He goes by a few nicknames but his real name is Rosario and he’s the winemaker at Mondo del Vino, the producers of this great value red from Puglia in southern Italy.
Negroamaro. Primitivo. Montepulciano. Nero d’Avola. All classic grape varieties in the Italian wine scene. “Il Sarone” was clearly having a problem deciding which grapes to use for the wine being named after him. So he used them all!
Yep, “Big Saro” came up with a big blend of these varieties to craft this pretty unique and totally delicious Italian red with each grape variety bringing something to the blend.
Negroamaro – an exotic perfume
Primitivo – power and richness
Montepulciano – freshness and spice
Nero d’Avola – fruity softness
Scoring 90/100 and selected as one of Master of Wine Bob Campbell’s “Top 10 Reds for August 2023” – Bob said “A blend of negroamaro, primitivo, montepulciano and nero d’avola from the Puglia region of Italy. Intense, flavoursome red with a strong fruit focus including plum, blackberry and ripe cherry flavours. A real crowd pleaser.”
We’re told Rosario is a pretty typical Italian name. So it’s no surprise to know that Il Sarone goes with fairly typical Italian fare too – wood oven baked pizzas, pastas, hearty spag bols and platters with cold cuts like salami and prosciutto. Buon Appetito!
