The coq (ahem, rooster) on the label is the Vavasour family crest. Above it says “1986” – which is the year Peter Vavasour first planted vines in Marlborough’s Awatere Valley.
But the Vavasours’ history with Marlborough goes waaay back to the 1890s when they first landed there. In fact if you really dust off the history books you’ll find the Vavasours trace their ancestry back to the Norman invasion of England. They reckon one Vavasour ancestor was a wine taster for William the Conqueror. Serve up some bad wine and the bastard will have your head!
This latest 2022 vintage is an absolutely top shelf Marlborough SauvyB. It’s won Trophies for best Sauvignon Blanc at both the NZ International Wine Show and Marlborough Wine Awards! As well as winning Golds at both of those shows it also won Gold at the New World Wine Awards 2022. So that’s a whopping 2 Trophies and 4 Gold medals! Not bad at all!
The judges at the NZ International Wine Show said “Concentrated aromas and flavours of passionfruit, fresh yellow stone fruits and a touch of pineapple with freshly cut summer herbs. The perfect summer wine, pair with fresh seafood. Delicious. A long lingering finish.”
A herbaceous, aromatic style Awatere Sauvignon drizzled in class.
